Traditional pregnancy guides don’t prepare moms for spina bifida … rare genetic disorders … cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” guides parents through their baby’s birth, but not the lifetime of work that will follow for a special needs child.
Thankfully, at least in Virginia, there’s a nonprofit committed to just that. In 2021, we featured the nonprofit Children’s Assistive Technology Service, commonly known as CATS. With insurance companies often denying the equipment needed, CATS provides free, refurbished walkers, wheelchairs, standers and other assistive technologies to help special needs children reach their full potential, and perhaps just as importantly, ease the burden of their caregivers.
Here in 2024, we’re honored to revisit this nonprofit as it’s celebrating its 10th anniversary, and provide it with some new … buzz!
