About BUZZ in Birmingham:

Launched in 2020, BUZZ airs on public television in Virginia – and on YouTube – and features the great work that nonprofits do in our communities, and the marketing pros who donate their time and talent to help these life-giving organizations attract more donors, volunteers and clients to their cause. A native of Birmingham, BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill brought his show to his hometown in 2023. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube.

Alabama Public Television broadcast schedule:

May 9, 8:30 pm – Christian Service Mission
Birmingham native Michael Hemphill is back in his hometown highlighting and helping nonprofits on BUZZ! In this episode, BUZZ focuses not only on the people served by Christian Service Mission, but its volunteers who do the serving. Such as Dickey Atchison … best known as Bo Jackson’s high school football coach, who suffered a deep depression after the untimely death of his wife of 49 years. He found healing through his volunteer work building homes for people in need through Christian Service Mission.
May 16, 8:30 pm – Holy Family Cristo Rey
Algebra, social studies, English … Information Technology at HOAR Construction? Human Resources at Blue Cross Blue Shield? Such corporate work study programs are part of the school day at Holy Family Cristo Rey. Founded more than 50 years as a Catholic school for the Ensley community, Holy Family adopted the “Cristo Rey” model in 2007 to better serve low-income, underserved families in Birmingham. Students today graduate with more than a diploma, but a resume of real-world work experience and invaluable business skills.

May 23, 8:30 pm – Sav-A-Life
What about what to expect when you’re not expecting? That’s the life-changing reality confronting countless women each year who find themselves unexpectedly pregnant … and afraid. In a country that increasingly considers itself prolife, but offers increasingly fewer services once that life is born, women have only weeks at most to decide what to do about their pregnancy. The nonprofit Sav-A-Life provides wrap-around services so that the clients who walk through their doors make life-affirming choices for themselves and their unborn children.
May 30, 8:30 pm – Down Syndrome of Alabama
About one in 700 children are born with Down syndrome. That’s 85 births each year in Alabama. The future for them, and their caregivers, is fraught with a variety of worries and stress. Through Advocacy, Connections and Education, the nonprofit Down Syndrome of Alabama envisions a state where individuals with Down syndrome are accepted and included for who they are. DSA provides hope and support to each person and their families with educational resources and networking opportunities throughout all stages of life.

BUZZ in Birmingham stars Bundles of Hope

As originally broadcast on January 5, 2024, on Alabama Public Television …

Food, shelter … diapers? For low-income moms struggling to get by, diapers are a vital, and expensive, necessity that aren’t covered by government assistance. Too many caregivers in Alabama – including grandmothers – have to make the hard choice between diapers and utilities, clothing, even medicine.

In the final part of BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill’s 4-part series in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, he meets Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank, which each month distributes more than 150,000 free diapers and other essential products to 3,300 low-income families in Central Alabama. Martin Advertising / Martin Retail Group steps up to provide Bundles with a lot of marketing help — and hope.

This episode is sponsored in part by the Mike & Gillian Goodrich Foundation.
